Final Evaluation

Overall I have really enjoyed this project. I found the book of Great Expectations enjoyable and really enjoyed the opportunity to put my own spin on the characters. I loved that we got to learn such a variety of special effect techniques during this project and I enjoyed using these techniques when recreating the Great Expectations characters. I had no option but to have a young model to portray Miss Havisham, I would have preferred someone middle aged as then I could of done a more TV and Film appropriate look, but as my model was young I had to use some theatrical ageing to get my desired effect. I didn't want to go all out and apply heavy wrinkles, so I used a colour only slightly darker and only added wrinkles in the most obvious of places. I am happy with the way this turned out as it definitely aged my models face but not to the point where the look is overly heavy and dramatic. Before creating the look I looked into Miss Havisham's lifestyle and the toll it would have on her appearance. I took this into account when creating my character. I wanted Estella to have very fresh, pretty, Victorian make up, which was opposed by the ugly bruise on her eye. I took time looking into different bruises and working out if I wanted Estella's to be old or new and practising bruising to perfect the tones I wanted to use. I knew that I wanted Estella's hair to be a main focus in the look as late Victorian hairstyles were far more elaborate and pretty. I was happy with how the hair turned out as I found the style hard when practising. It does need polishing but I am pleased I managed to create the correct structure. With both shoots I made sure to practice before hand, giving extra focus on any SFX I had to create to make sure I was confident in the looks I was creating. In our second project on contemporary Gothic Horror, I have loved getting the opportunity to create my own characters for a TV show and the amount of flexibility we had to use our imaginations and artistic licence. I am a fan of the Gothic Horror genre so it was great to learn more about a topic I already loved, and pick from TV Series's I enjoy to introduce my character in. I had already watched AHS, True Blood and the Vampire Diaries, so I knew I wanted to introduce my characters to a show I already loved and understood as it would be easier to imagine how they would fit into the plots. True Blood was the one I had watched most recently and I love the dark, southern themes running through it with links to religion and prejudice, so felt it was perfect to introduce my characters into. I loved continuing to learn about special effects I could use to make my work more original and creative, and researching some techniques out of class. I found some of the techniques challenging at first but have practised a lot more in my own time this project to gain confidence. I made the decision to use the same model for both characters, as I wanted Quentin to be a reflection of Claudia as he is a figment of her imagination, and also for him to have a more feminine look about him as he is so emasculated. I wanted my characters to be original, but still recognisable as True Blood characters, which is why I chose to use the word 'mine' which has a lot of meaning within the show, and I chose to add a blood tear to Claudia's look. I think my favourite thing about this project has to be how flexible the brief has been, I find it easier to think of creative ideas and complete my own research when there is more room for imagination and creativity.

Quentin Shoot




These are the final images for my Quentin shoot. I wanted Quentin's look to be very simple, letting his scars take the main focus. My model for Quentin was female, I chose to use the same model for both Claudia and Quentin as because he is imaginary, ultimately Quentin is a reflection of Claudia herself. I started by applying a base, and contouring the face to make it appear more square jawed and masculine. I filled in my models brows with a colour darker than her hair as after examining pictures of men, I noticed that it is very common for their brows to be darker than their hair. I also changed the shape of my models brows so they were straighter and fuller. I used a purpley supra colour to create dark shadows under the eyes as Quentin would most likely be tired from all the abuse from Claudia. As Claudia uses Quentin to feed on, I wanted to display this through the Vampire bites on his neck. I created two dots on Quentins neck, using a dark shade to make them appear deep, and from there I dripped fake blood so it ran down his neck. The most time consuming part of the look was creating Quentin's many pieces of scarification, created by Claudia. I applied these after the main base, but also covered them with a layer of foundation to mute down the colour to a natural looking scar shade. My idea for human Quentin was that he is quite a quiet, artsy type, so I chose to brush my models hair back into a scraggly ponytail, and had her wearing a white collarless shirt.

I was pleased with how this look went, although there are some things I would change. The colour I used for the scars was slightly darker than in my practices, and I think a slightly paler colour could of helped achieve a more natural effect. I made the decision to leave Quentin without any facial hair, as I didn't want this to interfere with his scars or limit the space I had to create them, but I feel that adding a moustache would of helped create a more masculine look for him.

Claudia Shoot*








These are the final images for Claudia. I chose to go with a very Gothic glam look for her, which in keeps with Brigette Ellis's make up on the show. I have gone for a dark purple smokey eye with dramatic liner and vampy purple lips. A concern I had with this make up look was making it clear that Claudia was a vampire. The Vampires on the show clearly have something extra about them, but unless their fangs are out its not in your face. I added extra redness around the eyes and tearduct, and didnt bronze the skin.  I did use some fake fangs in my look, as I love how fierce the Vampires on True Blood look with their fangs out. I was unsure wether to add the tear of blood to my look, so first I created it without. I ended up really liking the tear, I think it adds something extra to my design that makes it clear which show the character belongs in, and shows Claudia's upset for hurting Quentin. I loosely curled and then backcombed my models hair to create an almost 80's rocker look. For Claudia's clothes, I went for a netted bralette and leather jacket and shorts combination. This is similar to the way the True Blood Vampires dress, as it is seductively Gothic, but still adds sex appeal to the show.

Overall I was pleased with the way this look went, if I was to do it again I would make some minor changes such as purchasing a red eyeliner pencil, as then I could add more redness to the eyes safely, and also telling my model in advance to not tan her skin prior to the shoot, as this made it difficult for me to achieve the skin tone I wanted without painting the entire body.

Claudia and Quentin Fashion Development


These are the clothing items I can see my Claudia character wearing. I want her character to have the Gothic edge with textures such as lace and leather, but still add sex appeal to the show. I wanted Claudia's outfit to be all black, so the purple tones in her make up take the focus and stand out. I didn't want her to be too unclothed, so I will cover a small lace bralette with a open leather jacket to make the look more subtle but still effective. 



These were my clothing ideas for Quentin. I see him as having quite a laid back, arty, casual style with neutral and earth tones (linking to his humanity) and simple pieces. I like this collarless shirt as it is classic and simple but the lack of a collar stops it from looking smart. I am considering adding a waistcoat for quentin to add more masculinity to the look, but I'm not sure if it gives off a smarter vibe than what I'm going for. I also like the idea of quentin being quite feminine as he is so controlled and emasculated by Claudia.

Quentin Step by Step


Needed:
Base Palette
Powder
Concealer Palette
Anastasia Dipbrow
Supra Colour Palette
Aqua Colour Palette
Rigid Collodian
Angled Brush
Detail Brush
Foundation Brush
Powder Brush 
Contour Brush 

Method: 
1. App;y a thin layer of base to the skin. 
2. Conceal any blemishes. 
3. Use a brown cream shade to contour the face. I was aiming to make the face more masculine, so I squared off the jaw.
4. With your detail brush, mix up a scar like colour from your aqua colour palette.
5. Apply to the face in the shape of the word mine, on the forehead, cheeks and chin.
6. Apply the rigid collodian over the top and layer up until you reach the desired effect. 
7. Buff foundation over the scars to blend. 
7. Powder the skin
8. Brush your models hair
9. Brush the hair back into a low pony, back comb and loosen to make it look messy.

Claudia Step by Step


NEEDED:

Curling Tong
Tailcomb

METHOD: 
1. Start by applying the base with a foundation brush, buffing into the skin. 
2. Conceal any blemishes
3. Powder the face
4. Contour the face using the Grey shade in your eye palette (cheekbones, nose)
5. Apply a plummy blush shade 
6. Brush through the brows with a spoolie, use your angled brush to fill in the browns. I went for an arched brow look for claudia. 
7. Use the dark purple shade all over the lid, building up the colour to get it really intense. Take this shade under the eyes. 
8. Take the black shade on your blending brush and work it through the crease, in a winged out shape.
9. Once the eyes are dark enough, create a graphic winged liner with your gel liner and angled brush.
10. Apply Mascara using a disposable spoolie.
11. Take some purple supra colour on your lip brush, and carefully fill in the lips. 
12. Apply some MAC shine mixing medium to the lips.
13. Brush through the models hair.
14. Using your curling tongs, loosely curl your models hair.
15. Back comb from the very bottom of the hair to the top to create a big, backcombed style.

Scarification *



Scarification is the art of purposefully cutting/burning the skin in a design, and prolonging the healing process to create a visible scar. It has been widely used by tribes such as the Maori and the Aborigine people as a way to decorate the body and as part of age milestone rituals such as when a child reaches puberty or gets married. I loved this idea for the character of Quentin, for Claudia to brand him with scars of 'mine' to display her claim on him.

I like the bottom right picture for Claudia and Quentin as this is what I had imaged the Quentins scars to look (although faded). I feel that the art of scarification could be seen as quite intimate and personal. seeing as it involves someone cutting another person and spilling their blood. I think this method of tattooing ties in perfectly with the Gothic, as it blurs the lines between right and wrong. Harming another human seems fundamentally wrong but when it is as closely ingrained in some societies as scarification is, it is actually seen as a right of passage. This juxtaposition is a theme within the Gothic so I feel that this is the perfect method for Claudia to use to brand Quentin.

Who is Claudia channelling?

Due to Claudia's fascination with Gothic movies, she often bases her style on a character from a film. I think Claudia could be subtly channeling Anna Valerious from the film Van Helsing. She wears a corset which hints at the outerwear as overwear trend, which Claudia herself loves to follow. She also wears a lot of deep wine, purpley shades that Claudia includes in her own make up.
Claudia's hair starts off a lot like Anna's, but she backcombs it and neglects to brush it which creates a much more voluminous effect.













Vampire bites *



This is a tutorial I watched when thinking about how to best create Quentin's bite marks. I really like the way scar wax has been used to make the area seem raised and inflamed. I have tried to recreate the look without scar wax below, simply by using different shades of red to create the depth of the bite.

Creating Quentin's scars*


For my character of Quentin I wanted to recreate the look of scarification. I knew that the best way would be to use Rigid Collodian, but as I am on a budget I first wanted to try out an idea I had using Gelatine. Gelatine is commonly used to create burns, but as some scarification is performed by heated metal branding techniques, I thought that if the technique payed off, a more burned look would still work for my Quentin character. I bought regular Gelatine intended for baking to try out the look. I started by applying a reddish purple colour (the colour a scar usually starts of as) in the shape of the words 'mine' that I wanted to apply to the skin. After heating up the Gelatine mixture I started to apply it to the words. I didn't find this technique to work very well, the shop bought Gelatine wasn't the right consistency to paint onto the words, and as I had used the oil based supra colour it was difficult to adhere. I realised it was probably the wrong product to use so went ahead and purchased some rigid collodian. 


I first tried with the rigid collodian using supra colour as my base colour again. I liked the effect the collodian created for the scars, but found when it came to blending foundation over the top, the oily supra colour blended out making the whole area pink. 

I decided to try again using Aqua colour. After repeating the same process as before but using the Aqua colour, I was really pleased with the look of the scar. The drier consistency was easier for the collodian to adhere to, and didn't colour the whole area after foundation was placed on top. It would be interesting to try the first method using gelatine with the Aqua colour, and see if this would make this technique more successful.

Scars with Rigid Collodian*



This is the technique I might use to create Quentin's scars. I really like the effect it creates as it creates depth to the look and is very realistic. For Quentin, I may not add as many layers of the product as his scars would not be quite as deep as this.

Quentin Hair Charts


This is my first hair look. I wanted for this version of Quentin to also have a sort of punky look about him, with peircings and facial hair. His long hair has been pulled back into a loose braid, tied with a string of leather.

This second look goes alongside a very Gothic make up look for Quentin. This long, poker straight, black and slicked back style is very harsh on the face. I like this look, but it would be hard to achieve without a model with long black hair which my model does not have. It would also not be at all challenging to create.


My final look for quentin is also very simple. However I think it fits with Quentins artistic, soft centred personality as this loose blonde ponytail could be seen as femenine. I have added some texture to the hair with backcombing to make it look lived in and unkempt

Claudia Hair Charts


This is the most simple hair look of the three. The reasoning behind this is that the make up that goes with this Is also very simple because Claudia hides away, seen by no one and wants to look and feel as human as she can. By doing this she is going for a very natrual, girl next door type look if not slightly unkempt. I like the simplicity of this look but decided it wouldnt challenge me at all so it is not what i want to create for my final design.


This next look is a very cutesy, kitsch hair look to tie in with claudia's apartment decor. The hair is tightly curled and flowers bave been added to create a sweet, girly look. I really love this look but have decided it wouldn't work that well within the series of True Blood.


The look I have decided to go for is this big, backcombed, curly look. I love the rock chick glamour this look brings, I think it goes hand in hand with the make up to make claudia look really fierce. This is the look i have chosen for my final design.

Quentin Face Charts





This first look for Quentin very Gothic and Extreme. I love the dark eyes and lips and feel it would fit within True Blood, but didnt think it was delicate or human enough to go with Quentins personality. 
This next look is a punky, peirced, laid back look for Quentin. I also think this would fit within the show as a lot of the vampires are peirced and tattooed, but again i didnt feel this look fitted quentins character profile as well as it could. 
This is my final Quentin look. I have tried to show his humanity as much as possible through the use of scarring and blood (as vampires heal). I wanted to show the toll that loving Claudia takes on him, through his scars, tired bags under his eyes, and the bites on his neck from where she has fed on him.

Claudia Face Charts

This first look for Claudia is very toned down and neutral. I wanted this look to covey that claudia was too sad to put much effort into her make up. I decided this look wasn't exciting enough as i wanted to make the most of having such a broad breif. 

This second look is based on the knowlege that Claudia has a very kitschy appartment. This bright, colourful, girly and kitsch look is based on the idea that she would extend this style onto her make up. The reason I didnt use this look is that I decided it wouldnt fit well within True Blood. 


This is my final look for Claudia. I love how Glam and Gothic it is with the purpley tones and graphic liner. I wanted Claudia to stand out in contrast to Quentin, and this look would fit in with the othor Vampires in true blood very well as they all share a similar dark, sexy look.

Brigette Ellis: The head Make up Artist on True Blood *


Brigette Ellis is the head Make up Artist on the True Blood Series. Before True Blood, she worked on successful shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 90210. In an interview, Brigette says that her favourite part of working on True Blood was that she gets to make the characters look beautiful, before messing it all up so essentially she gets the best of both worlds from one job. In an interview she also talks about some of the problems she faces on set. Due to the contrasting Make up the humans and Vampires wear on the show, nutidy scenes can be difficult as the White/Tan make up can smudge onto each other. She discusses how she decided to combat this by having the human characters have spray tans, so that their tans can't smudge onto the Vampires white skin. She also discusses some of the products that she uses on set, such as MAC's Cranberry eyeshadow for the red rims around the eyes. She talks about the look she goes for with the female Vampires on the show, saying that she wanted them to be 'super sexy' but didn't want it to be instantly obvious if they were a Vampire or not. I will keep these things in mind when creating my characters for the show, to be in keeping with the style of the Make up on True Blood.
