Scarification *

Scarification is the art of purposefully cutting/burning the skin in a design, and prolonging the healing process to create a visible scar. It has been widely used by tribes such as the Maori and the Aborigine people as a way to decorate the body and as part of age milestone rituals such as when a child reaches puberty or gets married. I loved this idea for the character of Quentin, for Claudia to brand him with scars of 'mine' to display her claim on him.

I like the bottom right picture for Claudia and Quentin as this is what I had imaged the Quentins scars to look (although faded). I feel that the art of scarification could be seen as quite intimate and personal. seeing as it involves someone cutting another person and spilling their blood. I think this method of tattooing ties in perfectly with the Gothic, as it blurs the lines between right and wrong. Harming another human seems fundamentally wrong but when it is as closely ingrained in some societies as scarification is, it is actually seen as a right of passage. This juxtaposition is a theme within the Gothic so I feel that this is the perfect method for Claudia to use to brand Quentin.

Who is Claudia channelling?

http://thetwilightsagacommunity.ning.com/profile/AnnaValerious
Due to Claudia's fascination with Gothic movies, she often bases her style on a character from a film. I think Claudia could be subtly channeling Anna Valerious from the film Van Helsing. She wears a corset which hints at the outerwear as overwear trend, which Claudia herself loves to follow. She also wears a lot of deep wine, purpley shades that Claudia includes in her own make up.
Claudia's hair starts off a lot like Anna's, but she backcombs it and neglects to brush it which creates a much more voluminous effect.

Vampire bites *

This is a tutorial I watched when thinking about how to best create Quentin's bite marks. I really like the way scar wax has been used to make the area seem raised and inflamed. I have tried to recreate the look without scar wax below, simply by using different shades of red to create the depth of the bite.

Creating Quentin's scars*

For my character of Quentin I wanted to recreate the look of scarification. I knew that the best way would be to use Rigid Collodian, but as I am on a budget I first wanted to try out an idea I had using Gelatine. Gelatine is commonly used to create burns, but as some scarification is performed by heated metal branding techniques, I thought that if the technique payed off, a more burned look would still work for my Quentin character. I bought regular Gelatine intended for baking to try out the look. I started by applying a reddish purple colour (the colour a scar usually starts of as) in the shape of the words 'mine' that I wanted to apply to the skin. After heating up the Gelatine mixture I started to apply it to the words. I didn't find this technique to work very well, the shop bought Gelatine wasn't the right consistency to paint onto the words, and as I had used the oil based supra colour it was difficult to adhere. I realised it was probably the wrong product to use so went ahead and purchased some rigid collodian.

I first tried with the rigid collodian using supra colour as my base colour again. I liked the effect the collodian created for the scars, but found when it came to blending foundation over the top, the oily supra colour blended out making the whole area pink.

I decided to try again using Aqua colour. After repeating the same process as before but using the Aqua colour, I was really pleased with the look of the scar. The drier consistency was easier for the collodian to adhere to, and didn't colour the whole area after foundation was placed on top. It would be interesting to try the first method using gelatine with the Aqua colour, and see if this would make this technique more successful.

Scars with Rigid Collodian*

This is the technique I might use to create Quentin's scars. I really like the effect it creates as it creates depth to the look and is very realistic. For Quentin, I may not add as many layers of the product as his scars would not be quite as deep as this.

Quentin Hair Charts

This is my first hair look. I wanted for this version of Quentin to also have a sort of punky look about him, with peircings and facial hair. His long hair has been pulled back into a loose braid, tied with a string of leather.

This second look goes alongside a very Gothic make up look for Quentin. This long, poker straight, black and slicked back style is very harsh on the face. I like this look, but it would be hard to achieve without a model with long black hair which my model does not have. It would also not be at all challenging to create.

My final look for quentin is also very simple. However I think it fits with Quentins artistic, soft centred personality as this loose blonde ponytail could be seen as femenine. I have added some texture to the hair with backcombing to make it look lived in and unkempt

Claudia Hair Charts

This is the most simple hair look of the three. The reasoning behind this is that the make up that goes with this Is also very simple because Claudia hides away, seen by no one and wants to look and feel as human as she can. By doing this she is going for a very natrual, girl next door type look if not slightly unkempt. I like the simplicity of this look but decided it wouldnt challenge me at all so it is not what i want to create for my final design.

This next look is a very cutesy, kitsch hair look to tie in with claudia's apartment decor. The hair is tightly curled and flowers bave been added to create a sweet, girly look. I really love this look but have decided it wouldn't work that well within the series of True Blood.

The look I have decided to go for is this big, backcombed, curly look. I love the rock chick glamour this look brings, I think it goes hand in hand with the make up to make claudia look really fierce. This is the look i have chosen for my final design.

Quentin Face Charts

This first look for Quentin very Gothic and Extreme. I love the dark eyes and lips and feel it would fit within True Blood, but didnt think it was delicate or human enough to go with Quentins personality.
This next look is a punky, peirced, laid back look for Quentin. I also think this would fit within the show as a lot of the vampires are peirced and tattooed, but again i didnt feel this look fitted quentins character profile as well as it could.
This is my final Quentin look. I have tried to show his humanity as much as possible through the use of scarring and blood (as vampires heal). I wanted to show the toll that loving Claudia takes on him, through his scars, tired bags under his eyes, and the bites on his neck from where she has fed on him.

Claudia Face Charts

This first look for Claudia is very toned down and neutral. I wanted this look to covey that claudia was too sad to put much effort into her make up. I decided this look wasn't exciting enough as i wanted to make the most of having such a broad breif.

This second look is based on the knowlege that Claudia has a very kitschy appartment. This bright, colourful, girly and kitsch look is based on the idea that she would extend this style onto her make up. The reason I didnt use this look is that I decided it wouldnt fit well within True Blood.

This is my final look for Claudia. I love how Glam and Gothic it is with the purpley tones and graphic liner. I wanted Claudia to stand out in contrast to Quentin, and this look would fit in with the othor Vampires in true blood very well as they all share a similar dark, sexy look.

Brigette Ellis: The head Make up Artist on True Blood *

Brigette Ellis is the head Make up Artist on the True Blood Series. Before True Blood, she worked on successful shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 90210. In an interview, Brigette says that her favourite part of working on True Blood was that she gets to make the characters look beautiful, before messing it all up so essentially she gets the best of both worlds from one job. In an interview she also talks about some of the problems she faces on set. Due to the contrasting Make up the humans and Vampires wear on the show, nutidy scenes can be difficult as the White/Tan make up can smudge onto each other. She discusses how she decided to combat this by having the human characters have spray tans, so that their tans can't smudge onto the Vampires white skin. She also discusses some of the products that she uses on set, such as MAC's Cranberry eyeshadow for the red rims around the eyes. She talks about the look she goes for with the female Vampires on the show, saying that she wanted them to be 'super sexy' but didn't want it to be instantly obvious if they were a Vampire or not. I will keep these things in mind when creating my characters for the show, to be in keeping with the style of the Make up on True Blood.

Character Development

Claudia
Claudia grew up in a strict, religious southern household, she had a unhealthy relationship with her parents that lacked emotion or guidance. Although rules were put in place for her to obey, her parents offered her little of their time and as long as she obeyed their rules she was left to raise herself, escaping into the world of Horror films as a distraction. Through her teenage years, Claudia had a close male friend who she had always had feelings for. He was Claudia's only confidant through her difficult childhood and they enjoyed watching horror films together. This led to an unhealthy obsession with the Gothic and Vampires in particular, when she reached adulthood Claudia rebelled, running away from home and seeking out a Vampire to turn her. Claudia underestimated the insatiable hunger she would feel once she had transitioned, and in an uncontrollable rage, she lashes out and feeds on her best friend, killing him. Overcome with grief, Claudia locks herself away in her apartment and creates herself an imaginary boyfriend Quentin who shares a lot of similar character traits with her deceased best friend. Quentin is everything to lonely Claudia, but her neurotic and manic personality leads to violent mood swings, she will go from happily sarcastic to enraged and dangerous within seconds. Unfortunately for Quentin, it is him who bears the brunt of these mood swings but he is ever tolerant and loves her anyway. Afraid Quentin will leave her for her abusive and violent ways, Claudia brands Quentin using scarification with the words 'mine'. This is the word that a vampire uses to exercise a claim over a human in True Blood.

Quentin
A figment of Claudia's imagination, Quentin shares a lot of characteristics with her dead best friend. They watch Horror movies together, and he shares the same calm, tolerant personality. Quentin loves Claudia and so he puts up with her mood swings and abuse. He is Claudia's main source of blood as she is afraid to leave her apartment for fear that she might harm someone. Claudia tries to control her aggressive nature that is a part of being a Vampire but unfortunately she can't so she uses Quentin to take out these urges. Quentin has a arty, laid back style wearing his messy long blonde hair in a ponytail and a nose stud. He bears the scars of Claudia's neurotic meltdowns, with scars saying 'mine' tattooed all over his face. What Claudia loves the most about Quentin is his humanity, as she misses her own so much. This is why I want the character of Quentin to be very weak, so emphasise his humanity against the Supernatural Claudia.

Working with HDTV*

HDTV is a far higher standard of Television, providing 5x the amount of pixels as regular TV. This is really challenging for make up artists as obviously a lot more care must be taken with make up application to make sure its flawless enough. Cinematographers use various techniques such as soft lighting, filtration, and degrading the image to make it less defined. It is the make up artists job to use appropriate techniques to get the actor looking as flawless as possible, such as applying foundation through an airbrush to eliminate brush strokes and build coverage. Even men require heavy make up when shooting in HD. Hairstylists and Wig makers have to be extra careful to ensure the hair is not fluffy or frizzy, and the wig nets don't show.

How will Claudia and Quentin enter the show?

After thinking carefully about how I want my characters to enter the show, I have decided that the best way is for Claudia to be turned by an existing Vampire. Claudia's maker Pam abandons her after her transformation as she has no interest in being a maker again after loosing her first progeny Tara. The characters are then brought into the show when Eric and Pam need a vampire they can trust to do their bidding. As a vampire must obey their maker, Claudia has no choice but to start working for Pam. Eric and Pam are unaware of Quentin as he is imaginary, but the new links with the outside world could start to challenge Claudia and Quentins imaginary relationship even more.

Inspiration for Quentin*

http://www.tattoo22.com/scarification.html

These are some images that have inspired me when creating Quentin's character.  Quentin is Claudia's imaginary human boyfriend, he is everything to to her but she uses him to take out her vampire instincts, hurting him terribly. Always afraid he will leave for this reason, Claudia shows her claim upon Quentin by branding him with the words 'mine' a term which in True Blood is used to show a Vampires claim on a human. I knew I wanted him to have quite a greasy, unkempt hair pulled back into a ponytail. I chose not to give quentin any facial hair as I will need that area to show the scarification that Claudia does to him. I love the style of the scarified words in the bottom picture, this is the style that I would like to use for Quentin, although obviously saying 'mine' instead of always.

Inspiration for Claudia *

For the character of Claudia, I wanted her to be quite dark and gothic looking as in her human life she couldn't fully express herself so now as a vampire she has the opportunity to dress how she wants. So far, my idea of Claudia will have long dark hair, which she wears down and straight with a centre parting. She experiments with her make up using a lot of dark colours, such as burgundies and plums and wears dark smoky eye make up. She also likes dark clothing, and dresses quite seductively, wearing a lot of lace and ripped pieces. Jewellery wise, she wears lots of long silver effect chains, and rings.

Claudia and Quentin Mood Boards and Colour Charts

This is my mood board for True Blood. The show features a lot of dark locations and blood, so the colour palette is definitely Red, Burgundy and Black. The promotion images often feature the characters splattered head to toe in fake blood. I have chosen the two images above as it shows the protagonist and her two love interests. I love how the images ooze sex appeal which is a very important aspect to True Blood. I have chosen to have blood splatters everywhere, as in the show the characters are always getting covered in blood, and the True Blood Vampires when staked, splatter leaving behind only a puddle of blood.

This is my mood board for Quentins character. To display his human nature I wanted to show calming blue tones, along with a flesh tone that I associate with humanity. The red represents blood, as these two tones together will make up Quentins skin tone as the pale fleshy pink tone shows he is a living, breathing human, and then the red blood shows how badly Claudia harms him, and the way he is constantly bleeding. I chose to use a picture of a scarred arm as the centre of my mood board, I love the way you can see the veins under the skin, something that shows his delicate humanity and something which would entice Claudia. I have used lots of images of scarification, but chopped them up and jumbled them to ether to show the mish mash of wounds and stitches Claudia leaves on him. I chose the word 'stitches' to represent Quentin as Claudia is constantly making wounds on Quentin, before sticking him up again and acting as if everything is ok.

Claudias mood board shows what I imagine her 'kitsch' apartment to look like. The cutesy decor is splattered with blood showing Claudia's erratic, split personality. The lips give an example of what I imagine Claudia's make up to look to look like, very vampy and dark. I chose dark red, purple and black as Claudia's colour palette, as this makes up the most of the clothing she wears, and ties in well the with dress sense of the female Vampires on True Blood. I chose the word 'awakening' as Claudia's inspiration word, as it represents her awakening from the ground as a Vampire. It represents the new life that Claudia has started since her transition, and how she wishes she could return to her old life.

Claudia and Quentin Pitch Presentation

This is the presentation I pitched in class of my initial ideas for Claudia and Quentin's characters.

Saturday 11 April 2015

True Blood

True Blood is my chosen TV series in which to introduce the characters of Claudia and Quentin. It follows the character of a telepathic waitress, Sookie Stackhouse who lives in the town of Bon Temps, Louisiana where Vampires have come 'out of the coffin' due to the production of a synthetic blood that allows them to not feed on humans. Living side by side with the human world True Blood explores the idea of what it would be like to live amongst the Gothic. The reason I picked True Blood as the series for which I created my characters, is I love the dark, twisted feel the programme has (made apparent in the opening credits by the 'Deep South' feel, showing Louisiana swamps, the church, sex, blood etc) while still having a lot of sex appeal and interesting story lines. The show is definitely not suitable for anyone under 16, as it features a lot of sex and graphic and violent scenes.

Image available at: http://trueblood.wikia.com/wiki/File:Tumblr_m7mb61bNqz1rykmlmo1_500.jpg
As you can see from the pictures above, the female vampires dress in a very provocative, decadently gothic and slightly trashy way. I want my character to be able to explore this style as in her human life she was very restricted and from a strict, religious, traditional southern family. I really liked the idea of Claudia being a Vampire, and Quentin being human, as she is the one who is free and he the one who is restricted which is the opposite of traditional Vampire fiction where it is usually the man who is a supernatural. I thought True Blood would be a great series to bring my characters in to as it pushes the stereotypical boundaries and anything seems to be possible.

Introduction to Claudia and Quentin

We were introduced to the new brief. This involves designing looks for two out of three characters, Claudia, Quentin and Miss Laderman. I am looking forward to getting to use a lot of my own ideas in this project, as it is a lot more flexible than the work we did on Great Expectations. We have been given some brief character profiles which we have to work around, and a list of contemporary Gothic Horror programmes which we can choose to fit our characters in to.

Character Profiles:

Claudia
Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is. All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements.  She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance. The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner.   However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.
 Quentin
Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it. He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods. Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.
 Mrs Laderman
Claudia’s neighbour in her 40’s. She alternately changes into a variety alter egos and is Claudia’s friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia’s only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs L’, has designs on Quentin. In fact she has designs on Claudia.
Out of the three, I feel I am leaning towards picking Claudia and Quentin. I feel that they will be more challenging to create and I will have more opportunity to experiment with special effects as Quentin is an imaginary character. I love the idea that his look changes to meet her requirements and that she has the power in the relationship.
Some of the TV programmes I am deciding between are:
True Blood - I love the dark glamour and gore of True Blood, I feel that a Gothic, Vampy, Sexy look would suit the horror film loving Claudia. A lot of special effects are used on the show so this could be a fun one to do to practice the skills we are learning in class.
The Vampire Diaries - The Vampire Diaries takes a very realistic looking approach to the whole Gothic/Vampire TV genre, I feel the make up and special effects they create are more refined and subtle than in True Blood. This would be a real challenge as the make up on the show is extremely realistic and suitable for HDTV, so I would have to be very careful with the techniques I chose to use.
American Horror Story - Stepping away from the Vampire theme, I think that American Horror Story (asylum) would be a great show to fit Claudia and Quentin into. I think Claudia's paranoia and ability to create a imaginary boyfriend would fit perfectly into this series of the show as it is set in a mental asylum.

Gothic Themes and Motifs in The Vampire Diaries

Faherty, A. and 277Followers (2015) ‘Check out the face of The Vampire Diaries newest character!’. moviepilot.com. Available at: http://moviepilot.com/posts/2015/01/09/the-vampire-diaries-has-a-brand-new-character-making-their-way-to-mystic-falls-2571430?lt_source=external,manual (Accessed: 26 February 2015).

Although the Gothic Horror thrived throughout the Victorian era, certain themes found in the earliest Gothic Horror novels are still found in modern day books, films and television. A series that I feel shares a lot with the original gothic genre is The Vampire Diaries. The series focuses on the uncanny town of Mystic Falls, Virginia and the lives of the human and supernatural beings that live there. In the beginning the show mainly focus's around the lives of Vampires and Humans, but more supernatural are introduced throughout. The show shares several motifs of the Genre such as...

THE HUMAN AND THE SUPERNATURAL
The human and the supernatural is a very popular theme among Gothic fiction, frequently featuring a supernatural male seducing or starting a relationship with a human female. The Vampire Diaries fits in with this theme right from the start through the relationship of Stephan and Elena. Although Stephan never abuses his strength or mind altering talents on Elena, his brother Damon is seen frequently to be using them to control the feeble minds of human women. This is a regular occurrence throughout the show, whether or not the control is used to make the women forget he is feeding on them, or to alter their thinking and make them adore him or do what he wants them to.

HEREDITARY CURSES
Werewolves are introduced into the show in the second season and so hereditary curses also play a prominent part in the plot of The Vampire Diaries. One of the main focus's of the hereditary werwolf curse is the sense of loneliness as they fear they are too dangerous to be around, so therefore push everyone away. This gives them a element of mystery, tied in with a history of keeping a dark family secret.

DOUBLES
Referred to as 'Doppelgängers' on the show these beings are an exact double in appearance. Very much like examples seen in Gothic Literature, their doubles are often unfriendly and seeking to destroy or bring unhappiness to the others life. In the Vampire Diaries they are very much two separate people, instead of the split personality idea's seen in novels such as 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. I feel that although different, the basic idea is the same - one half tormenting the other or ruining the others life. Although Katherine (who is the main character Elena's doppelgänger in the show) is a separate person, she doesn't see all the nice qualities in Elena that everyone else does, so is desperate to ruin her life, getting satisfaction out of making Elena feel terrible for any mistakes she has made. She doesn't see why she is seen as so much worse, so wants everyone else to see Elena for the not so innocent person that Katherine believes she is. Similarly to how Mr Hyde ruins the reputation of the respectable Dr Jekyll.

LOCATIONS
Although graveyards and ruins are places frequently used in the show, the town that all of the characters, human and supernatural is seen as small, quaint and very normal to everyone to doesn't 'know' of the supernatural happenings there. The earliest Gothic Horror novels relied upon this scary scenery to create fear in a way that modernised versions of the genre don't need to. The genre has developed, knowing that it no longer takes haunted houses, castles, graveyards etc to set a scary tone, as in modern society people are more scared of being not accepted socially, rejected by their family or the one they love once their secrets are found out, and loosing their humanity. This 'normal' setting helps to add an extra layer of mystery to the show, as there is a lot of focus on not letting the towns 'secret' get found out.

I think that the reason that modern TV shows like the Vampire Diaries still play on the Gothic Motifs used hundreds of years ago is that people still thrive of the idea of fear, but not in a straight up 'horror' sense.. they enjoy the Gothic Horror genre for its mixture of forbidden romance, lies, secrets and the possibility that in a normal setting such as a small town, these things can still be found.

Project Evaluation

Overall I have really enjoyed this project. I found the book of Great Expectations surprisingly enjoyable and really enjoyed the opportunity to put my own spin on the characters. I loved that we got to learn such a variety of special effect techniques from cuts, bruises, different type of burns and using moulds. I enjoyed getting to use these techniques when attempting to recreate the Great Expectations characters. I had no option but to have a young model to portray Miss Havisham, I would have preferred someone middle aged as then I could of done a more TV and Film appropriate look, but as my model was young I had to use some theatrical ageing to get my desired effect. I didn't want to go all out and apply heavy wrinkles, so I used a colour only slightly darker and only added wrinkles in the most obvious of places. I am happy with the way this turn out as it definitely aged my models face but not to the point where the look is overly heavy and dramatic. Before creating the look I looked into Miss Havisham's lifestyle and the toll it would have on her skin, hair and nails. I took this research into account when creating my character. I wanted Estella to have very fresh, pretty and typically Victorian make up, which was then opposed by the ugly bruise on her eye. I took time looking into different bruises and working out if I wanted Estella's to be old or new. I practiced bruising in class and at home to perfect the tones I wanted to use. I knew that I wanted Estellas hair to be a main focus in the look as late victorian hairstyles were far more elaborate and pretty. I was quite happy with how the hair turned out as I found the style hard when practicing. It does need some polishing but I am pleased I managed to create the correct structure. With both shoots I made sure to practice before hand, giving extra focus on any special effects I had to create to make sure I was fully confident in the looks I was creating.

Estella Assessment *

This is my final look for Estella. I was pleased with how this turned out, I kept the make up very simple by perfecting the base and adding a rosy toned cream product to the lips and cheeks to fit in with what would be used at the time. I contoured the face to make my Estella look thin and gaunt and used a blue tone under the eyes to create the look of dark circles. On one eye I created a black eye, and I am pleased with how realistic this looked. I chose to use red and purple shades to create a fresh black eye as opposed to greeny yellow shades for an older bruise. I was really pleased with how the hair turned out as I wasn't particularly confident on this style and my model had quite long, thick hair.  If I was to repeat the look I would practice the hair a few more times beforehand to perfect the finish.
